Went down to Kananaskis with Mike, Steven, and Andrea for a weekend of snowshoeing and winter scrambling (with the details to be decided at the last minute due to weather). Our first objective ended up being the true summit of Opal Ridge (south of the peak described in Kane's guide). setting out from the gas station at the Fortress Junction along HW 40 we quickly gained elevation onto one of the connecting slopes of Opal Ridge and after a couple hours of spring-like scrambling (pretty much snow-free) we gained the ridge and moved along towards the summit. The weather forecast for today described 'scattered flurries from the north', which sure enough was what happened and gradually as we gained elevation the views northwards became more and more shrouded in snowy clouds. Views from the summit were pretty great and the approaching storm from the North only added to the character of the area. While descending back to the road through the same route the flurries eventually caught up with us and gave the trip more of a wintery feel. Quite a nice short route with good views for the effort expended to get there. I'll have to head back and do the full traverse to the North summit someday.
